TOP SHOT competitor and San Francisco resident Chris Cheng recently posted an article on his popular web site about his experiences in training with the San Francisco Fire Department Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) and the San Francisco Police Department Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT.)
Completing the required 20 hours of training to certify with the SFFD as a NERT volunteer, Chris then went on to complete the additional voluntary 8 hours of training with the SFPD ALERT program and is now a State of California Disaster Service Worker certified responder with both agencies.
The SFFD NERT program forms the foundation of disaster response and recovery for the City and County of San Francisco, and all other city agency programs require voluteers to be NERT certified before undergoing additional voluntary training with either the SFPD ALERT program or the ACC Disaster Animals Response Team (DART) program.
At CCOP, we strongly encourage EVERYONE to take the FREE training from the SFFD, SFPD and ACC. Emergency response agencies will be stretched beyond breaking point if/when the “big one” hits, and pre-trained, experienced, confident and knowledgeable volunteers who can plug right into existing system to support the response agencies will be invaluable.
