This morning, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down DOMA and ruled that Prop 8’s proponents had no legal standing, sending Prop 8 back to the Ninth Circuit and effectively paving the way for same-sex marriage to resume in California.
There is a celebration planned in the Castro this evening, kicking off at 6:30pm. Castro Street will be closed from Market / 17th to 19th Street and 18th Street will be closed from Hartford to Collingwood Street. Stages will be set up at either end of the closed-off Castro Street with music and speeches being given.
As of posting time, fifteen CCOP volunteers have signed up to assist with the celebration, contributing as much as 90 combined hours of volunteer service from pre-planning this morning and afternoon onward into the celebration this evening.
We encourage revelers to come and celebrate responsibly and we are working with our event partners to ensure that the celebration remains safe and fun for all attendees.
If you have any questions or wish to volunteer, please send us an email at info@castropatrol.org.
