S.F.P.D. Chief’s LGBT Community Advisory Forum

LGBT Forum Logo Rv 1

The San Francisco Police Department Chief’s LGBT Community Advisory Forum is a voluntary group comprised of unpaid community leaders, organizers and volunteers who provide a vital liaison between the city-wide LGBT community and the Chief of the San Francisco Police Department.

Monthly meetings are held at a different district police station throughout the year.  All meetings are open to the general public and while a formal agenda is maintained for all meetings, opportunities are always made available for public comment.

The goals of the Forum are:

  • Build respect, trust and transparency between the LGBT Community and the SFPD
  • Provide SFPD requested solutions to community problems and issues
  • Provide opportunities to promote understanding and cooperation between the SFPD and all members of the city-wide LGBT community
  • Increase reporting of crimes against members of the LGBT community to the SFPD
  • Increase the responsiveness of the SFPD to all members of the city-wide LGBT community
  • Increase the number of LGBT Officers serving within the SFPD
  • Decrease targeting of marginalized LGBT community members and groups

Castro Community On Patrol is a permanent member of the Forum.

“We strongly encourage all members of the LGBT community to attend and participate in these monthly meetings,” notes Forum Chairperson, Ken Craig.

“The SFPD has made significant strides forward under Chief Greg Suhr to welcome, embrace and support the entire LGBT community, city-wide.  The department boasts a large San Francisco Police Officers Pride Alliance group which marches every year in the SF Pride Parade and which looks after the interests of the many LGBT Police Officers within the department. A number of LGBT Officers serve within the department in high ranking positions, including one at the Deputy Chief level which is the highest you can get before the Chief.  The department is among a few in that nation that has a permanent LGBT Liaison post as well as a Transgender Liaison post, each of which are filled by LGBT serving Police Officers.  In addition to this, many Police stations have Station LGBT Liaison personnel that members of the LGBT community can request to speak with at any time.”

“Since the Forum began in 2010, we have worked closely with Chief Suhr and the department on a number of significant LGBT related projects including:

  • The LGBT SAFE ZONE project which placed signs in every police station re-assuring members of the LGBT community that all police stations in San Francisco are safe havens where they will be treated with courtesy and respect at all times.
  • The SFPD COMMUNITY PARTNER project which encourages LGBT victims of crime to report such incidents through various community organizations that they are familiar with and may be more comfortable communicating with initially.
  • The LGBT COLD CASE project which works at a multi-agency, multi-community organization level to seek new information and witnesses in a number of bias related “cold case” files. “
