Following a considerable number of community requests over the last few months, and in response to rising assaults within the Castro, we’re working with our CP-USA and SAFE partners once again to bring FREE self-defense training to the community.

Castro Community On Patrol (CCOP), in collaboration with our safety partners Community Patrol USA (CP-USA) and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI) “Stop The Violence” project are excited to invite you to sign up today for our FREE community self-defense seminar which will take place:

Saturday June 22, 2013  from  12:30pm to 4:30pm at Eureka Valley Recreation Center, (Main Gymnasium), 100 Collingwood Street, San Francisco, CA 94114.

In response to increased assaults within the Castro and LGBT community in general, both in San Francisco and around the country, and as part of our PRIDE SAFE 2013 campaign, we’re proud and happy to offer this outstanding resource for FREE to the community.  The seminar is open to anyone 18 years of age or older (no upper age limit) and is designed to be low impact, fun, information packed, easily accessible and suitable for everyone.

The seminar will cover important topics such as:

  • The difference between self-defense and defending yourself
  • The BEWARE plan
  • Street smartz and awareness
  • Pre-planning and preparing
  • Recognizing and avoiding trouble
  • The importance of the Lizard brain (you’ll find out in the seminar)
  • Becoming a Sheep Dog !!
  • De-escalating situations
  • Simple physical defensive techniques if all else fails

The seminar will be led by Ken Craig, with the assistance of Mike Pierce and the support of CCOP and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Ken Craig holds three Grand Master level black belts in the martial arts of HapMoosaKi-Do, TaeKwon-Do and YongChul-Do.  As the founder and head instructor of Traingle Martial Arts Association for over fifteen years, Ken has taught both martial arts and self-defense for well over thirty years in Europe and in the US.  Ken was one of the founding members of Castro Community On Patrol and continues in his original role as Vice Chair of the Patrol Directors group with responsibility for volunteer training and emergency services liasion.  Ken is also Chief of the not for profit Community Patrol USA organization which assists other neighborhoods and communities in developing thier own similar groups to CCOP.

Mike Pierce holds a Master level black belt in the TaeKwon-Do martial art and has experience in HapMoosaKi-Do and YongChul-Do also.  Mike has been involed in martial arts and self-defense teaching envirnment for well over twentyfive years and was an instructor at Triangle Martial Arts Association. Mike is also participating as a representative of the Leathermen’s Discussion Group.
